Titanium is also highly corrosion-resistant, even when exposed to sea water and chlorine. Oceanographers report that titanium immersed for 30 years in saltwater produces no measurable corrosion. That’s because titanium instantly forms a protective oxide film when it’s exposed to a trace of air or water.

However, note that many products labeled “titanium” are just titanium colored, or they only contain a thin coating of titanium. The gear listed here are made with solid titanium or an alloy containing more than 90% titanium.

In my opinion, Snow Peak (Japan) has the most elegantly designed titanium gear, and Toaks (USA) seems to have the lowest prices.

The Brightest Keychain Flashlight: Titan Plus

I received this flashlight, and it’s very bright and solidly constructed. I personally carry this light on my keychain. But others might find it too large — if this is the case, I would recommend the compact ThruNite Ti3 (see below).

All Surefire flashlights are designed and built in the USA, although some components are still sourced outside the US. The company says:

We do import a few components – most notably, the finest light emitting diodes (LEDs) from top-notch manufacturers outside the country – to incorporate into our products. All of that said, we do rely on as many American-made parts and components as possible, and the assembly of these components is done under our watchful eye in the U.S. to ensure optimal quality.

The Titan Plus is available from Amazon for about $90.

The Brightest Compact Keychain Light: ThruNight Ti3

The brightest compact keychain flashlight, the ThruNite Ti3 shines with 120 lumens in its highest mode. This is a very small light — it’s only 2.76 inches (70mm) in length. Its body is a titanium alloy, and at 0.56 ounces (16 grams) — this makes it one of the lightest keychain lights.

The ThruNite Ti3 uses just one AAA battery and costs about $13. It’s fully IPX-8 waterproof — it can be submerged up to 2 meters.

Personally, it’s all the light I need to travel through the forest at night.

One negative for me — when the Ti3 is first turned on, it starts in “firefly” mode (.5 lumens), and it requires a couple of more twists to get it to”medium” mode (12 lumens). However, if you keep the light off between 2 to 10 seconds and then turn it on, the light will turn on in the last mode accessed, thankfully.

• The lightest folding bike on the market is the Pocket Rocket Super Pro Red 11. These built-to-order bikes weigh less than 16 pounds (7.2 kg). It costs around $7700.
• Allen Sports Ultra X has a carbon 20-speed bike that weighs just 18.7 pounds (8.5 kg). It costs around $4000.
• The lightest folding electric bike is the GoCycle. It weighs just 35.4 pounds and costs around $4500.

The Details

Bike Friday is a boutique bike-building company based out of Oregon. Two brothers, Alan and Hanz Scholz, founded the company back in 1992 and have been building high-quality portable bikes ever since. They’ve garnered a loyal following and have pushed themselves to build lighter bikes. Their latest effort is the Pocket Rocket Super Pro Red 11, which currently holds the title of the lightest folding bike available.

The Pocket Rocket Super Pro Red 11 weighs less than 16 pounds, due in part to its titanium seat post cover. Folding bikes typically weigh between 30 and 65 lbs, so this low weight is a major feat. The seat post saves weight and offers an extremely comfortable ride, making the bike an excellent choice for distant rides as well as everyday city trips.

Bike Friday lets you custom design every part of the bike. Seat tubes are available in everything from 26 cm to 62 cm sizes. Handlebars are ergonomically designed and are outfitted with cork tape. The Pocket Rocket Super Pro Red can shift an impressive 22 gears, way over industry standard for folding bikes.

Having the lightest bike on the market will cost you. The Pocket Rocket Super Pro Red’s biggest downside is its hefty price (around $7700).

Another Option

The Allen Sports Ultra X Superlight is roughly half the price of the Pocket Rocket Super Pro Red, but weighs 3 additional pounds. This superlight folding bike has a full carbon frame, seat post, seat, crank set, stem, wheels and handlebar. It sports a 20 speed Sram X9 drive train that gives it versatility.

It has 451 MM wheels and uses a press-linkage folding design that makes folding easy and allows the bike to be rolled like a cart in the folded position for easy transport.

The Allen Sports Ultra X Superlight is available from Amazon for around $4000.

This Titanium Key Chain Pry Tool by Schrade is made with solid 6AL-4V titanium — an alloy that is stronger than pure titanium (the exact chemical composition is: 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium, 0.25% iron, 0.2% oxygen, and the remainder titanium).

This is 6-in-One tool, it’s: a seal belt cutter, a bottle opener, a flat head screw driver, a wrench driver, a scraper, and a pry tool. It weighs just 0.5 ounces, and it’s 3.25″ long (8.2 cm).

Titanium Split Pea Lighter

Designed for keychains, Arc-AAA flashlights are barely larger than the AAA batteries they contain. The exact dimension are: 2.5 inches in length, 0.5 inches in diameter, and 0.95 ounces in weight (including battery). The Arc-AAA is made in Phoenix, Arizona by Arc Flashlights. The company only makes keychain-sized flashlights, and put a lot of attention into the design of their lights (see the FAQ page for all the technical details).

The Titanium Inka Pen is designed to be attached to a keychain. Weighing just 0.45 ounces, the pen’s case is constructed with aerospace-grade titanium, the and pen components are built from carbon fiber composite. It has a pressurized ink cartridge, which means the pen will write wet or dry at any angle, any temperature, and any altitude. If you’re going to be writing for some time, you can unscrew the stainless steel fob and reconfigure your pen into Full-Size mode.

The pen is made by Inka, a company based in Colorado, and created by Greg Adelman, a former marine engineer who worked for the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.
