I’d say get the hightest lumen projector you can afford — lately Epson has been producing some the best projectors under $300: e.g. this one

We need it to project to a group of about 50-80 people in a dark room. We mostly show still images at a 4:3 ratio. Our budget is about $800-1000. Can you suggest anything?
