The Niterider 3600 Pro is a 3600 lumen light made in the USA. This light has two chambers, and each chamber contains three Cree XML LED bulbs.

Niterider have a great reputation, and I’ve found their lights to be very durable — they’ve survived a few falls onto pavement from my bike.

This light is very bright and projects a wide beam hundreds of feet. A unique feature of this light is the included DIY software, which allows you to customize the settings it to your needs.

Note that the light’s beam is just too bright to use in an urban area, unless you greatly step down the intensity! If you feel you’ll be doing this, you might consider the 1800 Lumen Niterider or the 1200 lumen Niterider.

Almost every professional Christmas light installer uses conical LEDs for their displays. Conical LEDs are waterproof and snowproof because the LED is injected molded into the plastic cordage. Conical LEDs are also 25% brighter than an incandescent indoor Christmas light. The brightness comes from the intensity of the LEDs and the magnification of the conical lens.

The Details On Conical LED Lights

Overall, LED lights are a great choice for Christmas because the lights almost never fail, and they are impervious to freezing temperatures. They are also much more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. For this reason you can string up to 40 sets of LEDs together, and plug them into a normal electrical socket.

Conical LEDs are not recommended for indoor use due to their intensity (M5 or C6 LEDs are a better choice inside).

This headlamp weighs just 1.1 oz (32 grams), or 2.9 oz (80 grams) with an AA battery and headband. This makes it a great choice for a runner or night hiker.

In most cases, you’ll want to use the 116-lumen “medium” mode — this is quite sufficient to light up a trail at night. The Zebralight H52 lasts about three hours in this mode, when using a rechargeable NiMH batteries like the Eneloop Pro. The headlamp is also capable of accepting a 3.7V 14500 lithium-ion rechargeable battery.

When in high mode (300 lumens mode) it lasts about 40 minutes. In low mode it outputs 27 lumens — this enough light to read a book in bed for example.

The maximum beam length is 66 meters.

The Zebralight H52 is waterproof to IPX7 — this means it can be submersed for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter. This is due to its unibody aluminum casing.

The Details

The Olympus TG-4 camera can withstand extreme conditions. But beyond its durability, many people will appreciate the camera’s ability to autofocus very quickly — which is important for catching action.

The TG-4 also performs well in low light, and it features a super macro or “microscope” mode that allows the camera to focus on objects only 1 centimeter away from its lens (good for taking pictures of tiny insects or plants for example).

One quibble about this camera is that it takes only average quality videos. DPReview (a comprehensive camera reviewe site) said:

In a sea of mostly unremarkable rugged cameras, the Olympus Tough TG-4 sits at the top of food chain. It’s incredibly well built, responsive, full-featured and, with a little work, produces excellent quality images for a small-sensored camera. The only real negatives are its limited control over aperture and not-so-great video quality.

When reviewing this camera Imaging Resource said:

…[T]he TG-4 really does offer features not found in other waterproof and tough cameras. Based on previous shootouts and my experience with the TG-4, this camera should be at the top of your list if you’re looking for a waterproof and tough compact camera. The TG-4 gave me good photos for a waterproof camera, was generally easy to use and offered up enough unique features that genuinely held my interest.

The Best Non-Clicky Keyboard: Topre Type Heaven

The Topre Type Heaven is a solid, heavy keyboard made in Japan. People describe typing on this keyboard as “luxurious” and pleasurable. After testing this keyboard, I have to agree with these assessments, and I can feel a significant difference when I switch back to a regular keyboard.

The $140 Type Heaven is the only keyboard that uses the expensive Torpe switch. Most keyboards that use this switch are priced over $300.

The Topre switch combines a thick rubber dome with a conical spring, a design which provides the reliability and tactile feedback of other mechanical switches, but retains the smooth feel of a rubber dome design. It also makes Topre keyboard quieter than most other mechanical keyboards.

The Best Clicky Keyboard: Filco Majestouch 2

If you like your keys to have a satisfying click when you press them, you’ll probably enjoy the Filco Majestouch 2 more than the Topre Type Heaven keyboard.

Filco keyboards are also made in Japan, and they have a simple but very durable design. They incorporate the popular “Cherry MX” mechanism in their keys. When people refer to a “mechanical keyboard” they are generally referring to a keyboard with Cherry MX switches.

The keys on this keyboard have a mechanical and tactile feel. They are also fairly noisy — some people really appreciate this audio feedback and other do not.

Cherry MX keyboards come in a variety of types, the most popular for typists are the Brown and Red types. Here’s a quick comparison:

Cherry MX Red:

• No tactile feedback and it’s lighter so as to improve your double tapping motion
• You don’t have to bottom out the key to have it registered but since there’s no feedback, you don’t know when the key press is registered
• Some typists may have to re-read their output to check that they’ve made no mistakes

Cherry MX Brown:

• These have tactile feedback and they are heavier
• Improves typing experience as you do not need to bottom out a key to know that it has registered on the screen
• Heavier key means you need more force to press

The Filco Majestouch Convertible 2 is basically a wireless Bluetooth version of Filco’s Majestouch keyboard. It one of the few wireless mechanical keyboards on the market.

Summer is coming. Whether you want to watch the new season of Game of Thrones in the backyard or show MLB games on your bar’s patio, a projector is a great alternative to outdoor TV. You get a much larger screen size and some peace of mind, knowing that you can take the projector inside with you at night.

While there are no projectors specifically designed for outside use, there are a few elements that determine if a projector is suitable for the great outdoors. The main factor is brightness, which is determined by the lumen count. Anything less than 2000 lumens won’t hold up to outdoor ambient lighting — so get something north of that number. For daytime use, you want over 4000 lumens for a decent image. The good thing about high lumen projectors is that they also cast a larger screen, which is great for backyard movie nights and other big gatherings.

So do you a need a screen specifically designed for projectors? Nope! Any flat surface will do, although it is better if that surface is white and contour free. Go ahead and string a sheet up between two trees, or point the projector at the side of your house.

If you have want the clearest possible image, outdoor projection screens are available and do an excellent job of maximizing contrast and perfecting the entertainment experience.

The Best Large Screen Projector

Hold on to your hats. The Optoma EH500 3D DLP Projector is a blindingly bright 4700 lumens, which means it gives true HD images on 300 inch screens without a problem. So cast the game or a movie on a 3 story wall and impress your guests.

Using Texas Instrument’s DLP BrilliantColor technology for multi-color processing and native 1080p HD resolution, the Optoma EH500 gives a stunning picture in 10,000:1 contrast ratio. This is ideal for presentations and DIY drive in movie theaters. An array of connectivity options- including VGA, HDMI, and USB- make it easy to get your media on the screen.

Don’t be afraid to bring it outside. It can operate in temperatures as low as 40 degrees and as high as 100 degrees, making it suitable for a variety of climates. It has a projection distance of 1-10 meters, which allows for a good deal of flexibility. It also has front, rear, ceiling, and table top projection.

The downside of the Optoma EH500 is its short run-time. It is made for six hours on and six hours off, which means it is not the best for sports bars that want to show back-to-back games on their patio. The high lumen count also means that bulb life isn’t as long as we’d like — just 2500 hours on regular setting.

The Best Outdoor Projector

A good outdoor projector is light enough to be lugged around, bright enough to cut through some ambient lighting, and equipped with options to make alignment a pain-free process. It should also be affordable enough that, should the worst happen, you aren’t out an entire car down payment. BenQ’s HT2050 satisfies all these requirements and more, projecting true HD images on screens up to 180 inches in size.

The latest in BenQ’s line of quality affordable projectors, the HT2050 is a 1080p Full HD projector with a 15000:1 image contrast ratio. At 2200 lumens, it is bright enough to use outside with some ambient lighting, but can’t be used during full daylight like the Optoma EH500. At night the black levels are very good for this price range, but do fade away a bit with ambient lighting. It uses 3D DLP.

This is not a short throw projector. The throw range is 1.15 to 1.5 meters, but from the furthest distance you can achieve an image size of almost 200 inches, which is massive and will satisfy a crowd of hundreds of people.

It has vertical lens shift and keystone correction, which helps with set up. Most projectors at this price range do not have horizontal keystone correction and lens shift, and unfortunately this projector is no exception. The zoom is about standard for this class, as are the HDMI and USB connectivity.

It weighs about 10 pounds, which is light enough to easily be brought over to a friend’s house and for easy storage.

BenQ’s HT2050 projector is available at Amazon for about $800.

The Best Outdoor Projector Screen

Invest in a projector screen if you want a professional and polished viewing experience. Good outdoor projectors are weather resistant to an extent, but you will still want something portable that you can disassemble in inclement conditions or if not in use. Elite Screens Yard Master 2 is a great outdoor option. The screens are durable and can be put up and broken down with ease. Sold in many sizes, they can be set up indoors and outdoors, just like your projector.

• The printer that uses the least amount of ink is the Epson WorkForce ET-4550 EcoTank. It has wireless connectivity, color printing and, for those few who still need it, a fax.
• Epson also manufactures the Pro WF-R4640 EcoTank, which includes ink to print up to 20,000 black and 20,000 color pages. It has two paper trays and is great for medium-sized businesses.

The Details

We have two choices when it comes to printers: inkjet or laser. If you only need to print black-and-white documents, go with a laser printer. They are typically faster than their inkjet competitors and produce a sharp, crisp black-and-white text. If you print graphics and photos, you will want an inkjet printer. They excel at photos, but are also capable for standard black-and-white printing.

Epson’s EcoTank series of printers conserve the most ink of any inkjet printers. Though they are an investment upfront, they will save you plenty of money in ink over your lifetime. The ET-4550, which is designed for personal use, is sold with 2 years of ink. It can print up to 11,000 black pages and 8,500 color pages, which is equivalent to about 50 standard ink cartridges.

When you do run out of ink, it won’t break the bank to refill. EcoTank’s use ink from bottles instead of cartridges. The refill ink bottle costs about $50 and lasts another 2 years.

Epson claims it can do away with ink-wasting cartridges because its printers use Micro Piezo print head technology. The hardware has permanent mechanical print heads that  are always connected to the printer. This means ink can be used from anywhere. In the EcoTank’s case, it is brought in from a massive reservoir on the side.

For Businesses

If you need faster printing speed, larger tray capacity and bigger inkwells, Epson offers the WF-R4640. Like the smaller model, the WF-R4640 uses ultra low-cost DURA smudge-resistant ink. The included ink reservoir is good for about two years worth of prints, or 20,000 black and 20,000 color pages.

It has 580 page paper capacity and a color touch screen display.

The Details

I’ve tested many earphones at Reactual over the last two years — probably about 30 earphones in total. Overall, I’ve been underwhelmed by most earphones on the market — even those that are recommended by magazines and blog (brands such as Beats, Audio-Technica, JVC, Sennheiser, MEElectronics, Sony, Symphonized and Westone).

My top issue with most earphones is a lack of sound quality — I’m very fond of rich sound with well represented bass. I also like my earphones to be comfortable and durable. I eventually found some earphones that were worthy of purchase —  here are my picks:

The Best Earphones Under $50: Dunu DN-12 Noise-Isolation Earphones

These $33 Dunu DN-12 earphones are very comfortable to wear and quite good looking too. In your hand, the DN-12’s body feels solid. More importantly, these are the best sounding earphones I’ve heard for under $50. The bass is very well represented, and the mid-range is warm and prominent. The treble is just right too — there is no sibilance at all — which makes for fatigue-free listening. Overall, the sound clarity is wonderful, especially for the price.

These are not sports headphones however — while walking or running these earphones tend to fall out your ear, due to their metal body.

The Dunu DN-12 is available on Amazon for about $33.

The Best Earphones Under $100: VSonic GR07

The VSonic GR07 earphones have excellent fidelity and a very balanced sound. If you read the Amazon reviews on this earphone — you’ll find almost everyone raves about the sound quality. Also, this is one of most comfortable earphones I’ve tested (my wife agrees — she loves these earphones).

If you are a bass enthusiast, check the Bass Edition of these earphones.

The VSonic GR07 is available on Amazon for about $99.

The Best Earphones Under $300: Etymotic Research ER4P-T

The Etymotic Research ER4P-T is significantly more expensive then the previous two earphones I’ve highlighted. But if you want audiophile quality from earphones, you’ll get it from these $264 Etymotic earphones. Basically, you are paying about $150 more than the VSonic GR07 for another level of sound clarity.

The people at Head-Fi reviews (who obsess about headphones) have this to say about the ER4P-T:

The ER4P-T is also very comfortable to wear.
