It even has an IP67 certified rating, meaning it is resistant to splashes and small-particle ingress.

It has a large 6.8″ screen, one of the largest of any e-reader, and it reads just like the printed page of a book, thanks to ClarityScreen+ technology. The screen is a beautiful high-definition that presents your books in wonderful quality. At 265dpi, the resolution is a bit worse than that of competitors like Nook and Kindle, but most readers would not even be able to notice the difference.

Previous iterations of the Kindle Paperwhite were a bit lacking in resolution and crispness, but the latest one sports an impressive 300ppi, which matches the flagship model the Voyage. It also has a vibrant and pronounced differences between black and white which leads to a satisfying reading experience. The screen is bright enough to to eliminate glare in direct sunlight and there are 4 LED lights for night reading.

There are less features than on the Voyage like microSD slots, and the device is heavier than others on the market. At the lowest price point it does show you advertising, which is a major turn-off for some readers. An upgrade can take the ads off entirely, which lets you enjoy the Amazon bookstore through WiFi.

The relatively plain Kindle Paperwhite can’t compete with the more expensive Kindle Voyage’s design. At nearly half a pound, it is a little on the heavy side, and like other Kindles there’s no microSD slot. A whole industry has formed around selling durable cases to protect smartphones from inevitable drops, or repairing shattered screens when they happen. Motorola wants to cut out the middle man and released the world’s first shatterproof phone. A lofty promise for sure, but does the product deliver? A WSJ reviewer thinks so:

Twenty drops. Ten times from five feet up. Ten times from 10 feet up. And the Motorola Droid Turbo 2′s screen didn’t suffer so much as a small crack.

UnlockRiver put the Droid Turbo 2 through an even more rigorous test, dropping the phone from a height of 900 feet. The Droid Turbo 2 had some slight cosmetic damage, but remained completely operational after the fall. UR gave it a durability rating of 9.8.

The phone is constructed with five layers of flexible plastic AMOLED and an aluminum chassis. All five layers are proven to absorb shock from dropping and to preserve structural integrity. They also protect the phone from environmental conditions such as adhesion, abrasions and environmental chemicals.

The phone claims to have a 48-hour battery life with a high capacity 3760 mAh battery that can be charged in 15 minutes. It also has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor 2ith 2.0 GHz Octa-core CPUs. It has 3GB of RAM and is available with 32 or 64 GB storage. It weighs half a pound.

The Droid turbo also comes with a 21 MP camera. I have the previous iteration of the Turbo and it suffered from shutter lag and I felt it never really lived up to its full potential. Motorola promises that the Droid Turbo 2 has rapid focus with zero shutter lag and a color-balancing dual LED flash to deliver more consistency. The phone’s main drawback is that is only available to Verizon customers.

The Droid Turbo 2 is available from Amazon for about $624.

Another Option

The CAT S50 is another durable smartphone. It is ideal for use on construction sites and similar environments. The CAT comes equipped with Military-grade dust water proof surface, and is drop-to-concrete resistant up to 6 feet.

The Leatherman Micra is available on Amazon for around $20.

Arc-AAA LED Flashlight

Designed for keychains, Arc-AAA flashlights are barely larger than the AAA batteries they contain. The exact dimension are: 2.5 inches in length, 0.5 inches in diameter, and 0.75 ounces in weight. The Arc-AAA is made in Phoenix, Arizona by Arc Flashlights. The company only makes keychain-sized flashlights, and put a lot of attention into the design of their lights (see the FAQ page of all the technical details).

The Arc-AAA is warrantied for life against manufacturing defects. It features a Nichia white LED light, and is waterproof to 100 feet. I’ve used this flashlight for about five years, and I’ve never had any issues with it. It has fewer scratches on it than my other keychain lights, perhaps due to its “Type III Hard Anodized 6061 Aluminum” casing.

The price is $29.95 for the standard model, and $44.95 for the premium model Arc AAA. It’s available directly from the manufacturer Arc Flashlights. There’s also three titanium models available that range in price from $125 to $140.

We like this flashlight because it’s made in the U.S. with a lot of attention to design detail. It’s also slightly smaller than the Fenix LD01 (below). However, the Fenix LD01 (see above) is much brighter than the Arc AAA, producing 80 lumens, which is quite bright for a keychain-sized flashlight.
