The Olympus TG-4 is the most durable waterproof camera currently available. This 16 megapixel camera can be submerged to depths of 50 feet (15 meters). It can survive being dropped from 7 feet (2.1 meters), or being crushed by a 220 pound weight (100 kg). The camera is also freeze-proof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 C). But what sets this camera apart from other tough cameras is the quality of the pictures it takes, and its quick response time.

The Olympus TG-4 camera can withstand extreme conditions. But beyond its durability, many people will appreciate the camera’s ability to autofocus very quickly — which is important for catching action.

The TG-4 also performs well in low light, and it features a super macro or “microscope” mode that allows the camera to focus on objects only 1 centimeter away from its lens (good for taking pictures of tiny insects or plants for example).

Here’s a couple of test photos I took in “microscope mode”:

Click the image above for a larger version

Here’s an underwater macro photo taken with the TG-4:

One quibble about this camera is that it takes only average quality videos. DPReview (a comprehensive camera reviewe site) said:

In a sea of mostly unremarkable rugged cameras, the Olympus Tough TG-4 sits at the top of food chain. It’s incredibly well built, responsive, full-featured and, with a little work, produces excellent quality images for a small-sensored camera. The only real negatives are its limited control over aperture and not-so-great video quality.

When reviewing this camera Imaging Resource said:

…[T]he TG-4 really does offer features not found in other waterproof and tough cameras. Based on previous shootouts and my experience with the TG-4, this camera should be at the top of your list if you’re looking for a waterproof and tough compact camera. The TG-4 gave me good photos for a waterproof camera, was generally easy to use and offered up enough unique features that genuinely held my interest.

The Olympus TG-4 16 MP Waterproof Digital Camera is available at Amazon for about $350.

The Overall Best USB Drive: 64GB HooToo External Storage Stick

HooToo updated its popular line of iPhone flash drives earlier this summer to incorporate the speed of USB 3.0 and improve design. The HT-IM003 model is housed in a durable aluminum alloy case and wins out in terms of functionality and design.

It’s slim, sleek, and sturdy. It weighs just a quarter of an ounce and is about 2″ long. On one end sits the standard USB 3.0 drive, with the lightning end on the other. This time around the lightning connected is protected by a cap that is attached by a key-ring. The connector is extended by 4mm which is just enough to work around thick protective cases. That’s a pretty important function, as it’s a pain in the ass to take off a phone case every time you want to use your device.

USB drives are not known for their fast speeds. But USB 3.0 technology gives the HooToo a significant boost over previous models. The drive hits 80 MB/s read and 30 MB/s write speeds on USB 3.0, with some user benchmarks surpassing advertised speeds. That’s good enough to transfer a full HD movie in less than a minute. Unfortunately, lightning port speeds are still stuck in the dark ages, with top read speeds of 30 MB/s and write speeds of 10 MB/s. That means moving large amounts of data from your Apple device to the drive will take a while, but still much faster than uploading to the cloud or sending via email.

HooToo uses a free app called iPlugmate to work on your device. The app has a simple interface that automatically segregates your files based into pics, music, videos, etc. It supports most common file types, including wav, mp3, avi, mkv, doc, pdf, and ppt. You can stream your files directly from iPlugmate while it is attached, which frees up valuable storage on your device. The app lacks any security features, which is disappointing.

Best 2-in-1 iPhone USB Drive: RAVPower Charging Cable

HooToo just released the RAVPower Charging Cable, a 64GB external storage device that doubles as a charging device. It’s the perfect 2-in-1 plug-in for viewing high-usage content like HD videos and picture slideshows.

The RAVPower cable delivers transfers files at a similar clip to the External Storage stick. That means the USB 3.0 port gets 80 MB/s 30MB/s, while the lightning port chugs along at 30 MB/s read and 10 MB/s write. It also operates on the iPlugmate app, which lets you stream most common file types directly from the drive.

The design differs in a couple ways. First, the metal USB 3.0 and lightning ports are connected by a soft rubber cord. This 5 inch long device is flexible, with no unwieldy clip. While the design is convenient, both ports are uncapped. This opens the possibility of them snapping in a purse or briefcase, which is a disadvantage compared to the standard drive. But its functionality as a charger offsets this restriction.

Update September 2016: The LG Minibeam PH550 projector now appears to be brightest (500 lumens) battery-powered micro projector. I will be testing it soon. It is said to produce a sharp 720 HD picture.

The best micro projector currently available is the iCODIS CB-300 Pico Projector. This two pounds device is high portable yet it produces impressive video and sound. It delivers 1800 lumens projection and Android functionality with built-in speakers.

The most portable micro projector that is still worth considering is the Coocheer Pocket Projector.

The Details: Micro Projectors

Micro projectors, also known as pico projectors or pocket projectors, have benefited from recent advancements in LED technology. When they first appeared on the market, pico projectors were a neat parlor trick but ultimately useless in all but the most ideal conditions. Lumen count and contrast have since increased, leading to clearer picture quality and larger projection sizes.

Micro projectors are ideal for work presentations and impromptu movie nights, but be realistic in your expectations before purchasing one. Many micro projectors do not come with built in speakers or HD video quality. These tend to be cheaper and smaller, fine for casting an Excel spreadsheet but useless if your goal is to play video games in the dorm room. I’ve found that a high lumen count is the single most important factor to consider when choosing a micro projector. Without enough brightness, its utility is seriously limited. Other factors to keep in mind include whether the projector requires an external power source, screen resolution, portability and audio.

A Micro Projector That’s Quite Bright: The iCodis CB-300

No matter what you want need your micro projector to do, iCODIS CB-300 can handle it. Not only is it among the brightest micro projectors currently available at 1800 lumens, it features a slew of smart features that make your life easier.

It has Bluetooth connectivity, a Micro HDMI port, 2 USB ports, and a mini USB port. It has a 6000 mAh internal battery that can last for 2 hours, and a 12V plug for an external power source if you require longer performance.

CB-300 acts a lot like a tablet or smart TV, thanks to Android OS 4.4 powered by built in CPU. You can watch videos from Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu directly from the projector, a unique and incredibly convenient feature.

Best of all, your movies will play in HD. The CB-300 is a 720p projector that can play 1080p files and has as a 16:9 screen ratio. It can focus up to 18 yards, but is better at closer. The screen display gets to around an impressive 75.”

Apple users have reported some difficulty streaming through the HDMI. Also, the device is a very portable 2lbs and 5″ by 5,” but it is not exactly pocket sized.

The Most Portable Micro Projector

If you need a micro projector that is truly pocket sized, go for Coocheer’s DLP Projector. While some micro projectors are as small as coins, they are worthless for projecting an image worth seeing. Coocheer gives you a respectable 100-200 lumens using an Android 4.4 OS in an ultra-thin design that will fit in your (large) pocket. It also has a built in 5000mAh rechargeable battery.

Using a Proprietary Wireless Adaptor to Connect to your Projector

If you already have an expensive projector, but it doesn’t have wireless capabilities, you’ll need to take another route. Projector manufacturers, recognizing the growing demand for wireless connectivity in projectors, often offer wireless dongles as an optional extra.
Both the sending device and receiving device are powered by USB, so you should be able to keep wires to a minimum. This system works through line-of-sight, so the receiving box should be within 20 meters of the sending box.

While a wireless kit is particularly versatile, it’s important to consider their cost, which is about $100 to $350 depending on the brand and special features. Since an excellent new wireless projector can be purchased for less than $800, it might be sensible to consider replacing an old projector with a new wireless one instead of using a wireless kit.

Using a Projector-Connected Computer to Make your Projector Wireless

One of the simplest ways to get the functionality of a wireless printer is to connect a computer to the projector and use the projector as this computer’s output screen. Then, use software that allows you to mirror your content across the network on the projector-connected computer.

Such devices are now available in tiny sizes no bigger than a USB drive with a single HDMI output that you plug into your projector.

A version of this method is to use an Apple TV device connected to the projector, and then use Apple Airplay to stream content to the Apple TV. If you use a Windows PC or laptop connected to the projector, you can use software like AirServer to stream content in a similar fashion.

Alternatively, if your projector-connected device supports Windows, like the tiny Intel Compute Stick, you have a wealth of software options to help you stream content over the network to your projector. A simple option is the use of VNC (Virtual Network Computing), which allows you to mirror screens across computers and remotely control the computer as if you were operating it with a connected mouse and keyboard. Free VNC software clients and servers are available for a host of operating systems, including Windows and Android.

If you are planning to stream movies, TV and music to a home projector, consider installing Plex Media Server on your desktop computer and Plex client software on your projector-connected device. This allows you to send your media to the projector with consummate ease. Plex client software is available for a wide range of platforms, including Windows, OSX, ChromeOS and Android.

The Details

AirPlay is Apple’s proprietary protocol for wirelessly streaming audio and video across a network. Compatible devices act as either a sender or receiver. With this innovative system, you can effortlessly transmit your music, videos or screen content wirelessly from a sending device and display it on a receiving device. No more need for a jumble of HDMI, USB, VGA wires to get something from one screen on to another.

There have been various implementations of Apple AirPlay since it was first introduced as AirTunes in 2004. Now, for the full AirPlay feature set, it is recommended that you stream content from an Apple device running iOS 4.3 (or later) or OSX Mountain Lion 10.8 (or later).

Your receiving device will also need to support AirPlay. The list of supporting devices is now huge, including popular devices such as Apple TV, Apple Airport Express, a wealth of speaker docks from suppliers like Bose, Sony and Philips, computers running AirPlay receiver software (like AirServer or Reflector) and Bluetooth devices that support A2DP.

Note that because not all third-party receivers implement Apple’s DRM encryption, some media, such as iTunes Store’s own rights-protected music (Apple’s own “FairPlay” encryption), YouTube and Netflix, cannot stream to those devices or software. On Apple TV starting with firmware 6.0, the “FairPlay” encryption scheme is enforced and sending devices not supporting it cannot be used.

Some receiving devices require the sending device to be running newer operating system revisions such as iOS 7.0 – be sure to check the specified operating system requirements of the sending device before you purchase an AirPlay receiving device.

In A Nutshell

The best projector for businesses with large, bright conference rooms is the BenQ MH741 Projector. It is incredibly bright at 4000 lumens and has true HD image quality.

The best projector for small businesses is the Epson PowerLite 580. It is an ultra-short-throw projector that can cast a 93″ image from as little as a foot away, perfect for cozy offices.

The best portable projector for business travelers is the iCODIS CB-300. It is handheld with an internal battery, and is equipped with a host of connectivity options to streamline presentations.

The Details

Whether you want to dazzle investors with a multi-media pitch or get the new hires up to speed on the intricacies of HR policy, a projector is a key tool for businesses of every size and industry.

No two businesses are the same, so every company needs to keep a few factors in mind when choosing a projector. Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding which projector is right for you.

Businesses want bright projectors, and the brightness of a projector is determined by the number of lumens. Home theatres can get away with low lumen counts because they are in rooms with low ambient lighting. Offices have glass windows and don’t want to turn out the lights and draw the blinds every time a projector turns on. That means businesses should stay away from the legion of LED projectors that have appeared on the market in recent years. While cheaper than 3LCD and DLP options, most LED projectors don’t hit the 2500 lumen minimum most offices require. Of course, if your office is dungeon-like and you are fine with presenting sans illumination, you can sacrifice a few lumens.

The next thing to keep in mind is picture quality, which is determined by the resolution, or number of pixels on the screen. High resolution gives a higher picture quality and sharper image. This doesn’t matter much if your projector isn’t going to be casting anything more glamorous than excel spreadsheets and powerpoint presentations, but it makes a huge difference for any graphic design elements or videos. This mean you want WUXGA resolution which is 1920 x 1200 pixels. This is a true widescreen ratio and similar to aspect ratio on most new computer monitors, and best if you want crisp lively images.

One last thing to keep in mind is ease of use. Choose a projector with automatic alignment options if untrained employees will be using it on a regular basis. Also, see what kind of connectivity options the projector has so you know how you will get your presentation on to the screen.

The Best Projector For A Bright Conference Room

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows are the big thing in contemporary architecture. Natural light is a great way to keep employees motivated and productive throughout the day, but it makes projecting an image a difficult task. Bright conference rooms call for bright projectors, and the BenQ MH741 1080p DLP 3D Projector has a bulb as bright as the sun.

BenQ MH741 gives you 4000 ANSI Lumens of brightness, which is over 1500 lumens more than the recommended minimum for presentations in conferences rooms or other areas where there will be ambient light. This means no matter how bright the room is, your presentation will shine in full 1080p true HD with crisp whites and satisfying colors. No need to dim the lights and make your clients or board members feel like they are back in high school math class.

4000 Lumen brightness is accompanied by a contrast ratio of 10000:1 and true widescreen native aspect resolution of 16:9, although there are five aspect ratios available, so you can choose whatever works best for you. While images are quite 4k of some dazzling home theater projectors, the native resolution of 1920 x 1200 is WUXGA 1080p full HD quality. True HD is possible on screens up to 200,” which is large enough for virtually every conference room.

This projector also gives the presenter some breathing room. It comes equipped with 2D Keystone correction, which allows for horizontal and vertical adjustments up to 30 degrees. This makes alignment easier and lets he presenter stand in front of the screen without worrying about blocking the image. Corner Fit also gives flexibility and convenience in the alignment process by allowing the presenter to independently adjust each corner of an image.

The BenQ MH741 comes equipped with a few other features businesses might find useful. It has MHL Connectivity, which allows proposals and ideas to instantly be brought on to the projector from Android smart devices. It also has a 10W built in speaker, “blanking” mode which freezes the projected image while you browse through files, and writing templates for off-the-cuff notes onscreen.

The Best Projector For A Small Office

If your office is lacking the grandeur of a Fortune 500 boardroom, go with the Epson PowerLite 580 XGA 3LCD. It is a very bright ultra-short throw projector, which means it can sit just a few inches away from the screen, which is perfect for smaller office rooms and tight spaces. Presenters will especially like the fact they don’t have to worry about getting in the way of the light stream when standing in front of the screen.

The 580 XGA 3LCD bulb is a very bright 3,200 lumens, which means you can leave the lights on for most presentations. It has an HD XGA 1024 x 768 resolution built around 3 LCD chips, so that will eliminate the “rainbow effect” some projectors suffer. This is a lower native resolution than Ultra-HD competitors like BenQ, but it is more than enough to maintain color brightness and keep your graphic design team happy.

It has a few other goodies most businesses will enjoy as well. A 16-watt mono speaker means that you won’t need to clutter the room with additional audio equipment. It also has a slew of connectivity options, including HDMI, USB, and wireless connectivity, so impromptu info can easily find its way onscreen.

The Powerlite 580 is a bright, technologically adept, useful projector that can cast a 93″ image from as little as a foot away.

The Best Projector For The Business Traveler

Going on an out of town sales call, but not sure if there will be a projector available? Bring along your own pocket projector to give a presentation on your own terms. Recent advances in LED technology have led to a proliferation of portable projectors at affordable prices. At first they were just a novelty item, but more recent models like the iCODIS CB-300 have enough brightness and battery life to make them worthwhile.

Released earlier this year, this DLP projector packs 1800 lumens and comes with a slew of connectivity features. While 1800 lumens isn’t quite bright enough to cast a clear image in a sunny conference room, it gives a brilliant display in rooms with moderate or low ambient lighting.

The CB-300 is a 720p projector that can play 1080p files and with a native resolution of 16:9 widescreen ratio. It casts an image the size of a large TV, or about 75.” This will cover a white office wall with a large screen with clear and precise images. It is enough for bare-bones excel presentations, and even good enough to show off graphic design work.

Casting your presentation through the CB-300 is easy. It has a Micro HDMI port, 2 USB ports, and a mini USB port. It has a 6000 mAh internal battery that can last for 2 hours, and a 12V plug for an external power source if you require longer performance. It even acts like a tablet, using Android OS 4.4 to run apps.

In a Nutshell

The BeoSound 35, made by Bang & Olufsen, is a wireless hi-fi “super soundbar” that stands as an unbeatable “all-in-one integrated music system”.

The Details

Renowned Danish audio products engineers and designers Bang & Olufsen (B&O) have come up with a soundbar that’s not a mere soundbar in the usual sense but something far beyond that, aesthetically and sonically. It’s the pentagonal BeoSound 35, a wireless “all-in-one integrated music system” that I find formidably good among mounted or standing audio systems of this kind.

The BeoSound 35 can deliver clear and powerful sound for 24-bit/192 kHz high resolution audio. Other supported formats include MP3, AAC, AIFF, ALAC playback, FLAC, WA, and WMA (but not WMA lossless). What’s more, support for streaming services including Spotify Connect and the Deezer app is integrated right into the system. Likewise, so is support for AirPlay, BLNA, Google Cast, and TuneIn. There’s connectivity for Bluetooth 4.0 alongside “old school” hard-wired inputs. The company has, characteristically, made sure that it’s simplicity itself to pair up the BeoSound 35 with other B&O audio equipment if you want multi-room audio. According to B&O, all of this makes it a true “all-in-one integrated music system”, and I have to concur.

The unit has an OLED display built in, along with on-board touch controls. You control the volume with a finger swipe.

Behind the face cover, you find a pair of forward-facing 4″ woofers and a pair of 0.75″ tweeters which are angled at 90 degrees to the woofers, each pair driven by an 80-watt Class-D amplifier. The unit’s frequency range is from 45 Hz to 22 kHz.

The BeoSound 35’s aluminum outer shell and elongated pentagonal shape are a seamless blend of optimal function and form. The aluminum simultaneously helps with durability and heat dispersion. The pentagonal shape is much more aesthetically pleasing than the usual “rectangular box” shape of mounted wireless hi-fi speakers, but it also provides additional sound quality. That is, with the unit’s bigger loudspeaker at its center and the smaller tweeters on the ends you experience a well-balanced, 180-degree, room-filling sound without the annoyance or disappointment of hot spots or dead zones.

It has been thoroughly demonstrated that the BeoSound 35 can utterly cascade a room with crisp, high quality audio which doesn’t allow Beats-like bass dominance or distortion — whether you mount the system on the wall or set it up on a table with the included aluminum stand.

At the time of this writing, the BeoSound 35 has only had demo models heard. B&O are putting it on the market in April, 2016.

It is possible to find an Apple Laptop for under $500 — you can get a used iBook, MacBook or Powerbook in this price range.

Note that you won’t find a new Apple laptop for under $500. If you want a new Mac laptop — the least expensive option is to purchase a Apple MacBook Air MC506LL/A, which was released in 2010, and currently sells for $849 at Amazon.

The Best Apple Laptops Under $500

Let’s take a look at the used Apple laptops you can get for under $500.

When buying a used or refurbished laptop, pay attention to the seller’s rating and return policy. In most cases you’ll want to avoid “newly launched” sellers, or sellers with ratings under 90%. When your used laptop arrives, you’ll know pretty soon if it works as advertised. If it doesn’t, you’ll want to be able to return the machine within 30 days. I’d also try to find a buyer who mentions that the laptop has a battery that “still holds a charge”. Many laptop batteries need to be replaced after 4-5 years. If you do find the battery unacceptable, it’s possible to buy a replacement Macbook batteries separately for about $40.

Apple MacBook MB403LL/A ($470-$500)

For just under $500, the best Macbook you can buy is an Apple MacBook MB403LL/A. This Macbook came out in Late 2008, and it has 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and a 13.3 inch screen. Although it was released 4 years ago, this is a perfectly acceptable laptop for 2012. It can run Apple’s latest operating system, OS X 10.7 “Lion”. I’d advise you to try to get this Macbook with 2 GB of memory installed — there’s not much price difference between a 1GB and 2GB machine, but the extra memory makes a difference.

The Apple MacBook MB403LL/A is available on Amazon for about $500.

Apple G4 iBook M9627LL/A ($250-$300)

If you really looking to save some money, you can get an Apple G4 iBook for under $300. These machines came out between 2003 and 2004. They have 1.33 gHZ processors and can run the OS X 10.5 “Leopard” operating system. While they are not speedy by today’s standards, these laptops work fine for web browsing and running other applications, though watching videos online can be frustrating. But overall, a quality computer from Apple.

The Apple G4 iBook is available from Amazon for $250-$300.
