If you are prone to getting cold feet in the winter, you’ll appreciate the warmth of a sock made with premium wool. If you venture outdoors, the extra warmth will allow you to be comfortable even while hiking in the snow.

The warmest wools are: qiviut (musk ox down), yak wool and bison wool.

Merino and alpaca wool are also very warm fibers. See my previous article for a closer examination different types of wool.

The Bose SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphone II is lightweight, comfy, awesome-sounding, and pretty close to unbeatable within its price range.

The Bose SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphone II is lightweight, comfy, awesome-sounding, and pretty close to unbeatable within its price range.

The Details

The lightweight (about seven ounces) Bose SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphone II model is a remarkable set of less-than-$300 headphones. Unlike their predecessor these wireless, Bluetooth-enabled headphones don’t come with an attached ugly dongle, making them efficient to use and able to give you the feel, sometimes, that you don’t even have any headphones on at all while the music or the talk streams through your ears.

The Bose SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphone II set features memory-foam earpads designed to help the headphones “learn” the shape of your ears, and they are quite comfortable, also including “glass-filled nylon and corrosion-resistant stainless steel” for durability. Controls are integrated on the right-ear cup while being intuitively easy to use.

These are not “noise cancelling” headphones, but the memory-foam earcup linings do a fine job of keeping out unwanted external noises.

A strong feature of these wireless headphones is that you can attach them to more than one device at a time by way of the incorporation of Bluetooth 4.0 and supporting multi-link technology, which makes it seamless to switch between listening to music and taking a phone call with the touch of the center control-button (which also acts as the fast forward and rewind toggle button when you’re in music-listening mode).

Needless to say, the sound quality is overall the most important feature of headphones, and the Bose SoundLink II wireless set delivers on that superbly. As is virtually always the case with Bose headphones, the sound is sleek and well-balanced with barely any distortion even at high volumes, making use of Active EQ and volume-optimized EQ technologies.

The treble is clean and clear while the bass has strong punch. If there’s any drawback to the sound quality, it’s that these headphones won’t impress music fans who love their music to be bass-heavy. The bass is punchy but the overall sound is balanced, not favoring the bass end of the music.

There’s also the added benefit of an excellent battery charge of 15 hours. You can also do a “quick charge” in just 15 minutes which lasts for two hours.

What it all comes down to is that you would be hard-pressed to find better wireless headphones priced at less than $300 than the Bose SoundLink Around-Ear Wireless Headphone II.

In a Nutshell

The lightest waterproof jacket currently available is the Outdoor Research Men’s Helium II Jacket. The jacket weighs just 6.4 oz and is made with 100% Nylon and a 2.5 layer 30D Pertex Shield DS rip-stop fabric.

There is also a women’s version of the Helium II.

The Details

A waterproof jacket is an item you hope you won’t need when travelling, but is something you never want to be caught without. That’s why an ultra-lightweight option is a perfect way to assure you’ll never be exposed or have to lug around a cumbersome coat. The Helium II is the lightest waterproof jacket out right now and it weighs about half a pound, a full 10 oz lighter than most rain jackets marketed as “lightweight.”

It is a pared down jacket, so it doesn’t include any pit zips and only has one pocket. It is very compressible, and can easily fit in a backpack or even a sweatshirt pocket. The lone pocket is located on the upper chest. Personally, I prefer hip pockets to put my hands in when its cold. The chest pocket is an advantage if you have a hiking backpack strapped at your waist. The Helium II also has an adjustable hood and a 7.5″ internal stormflap.

The Nylon material is breathable and will keep you dry in all but the fiercest of storms. It cuts the wind well for an ultra-lightweight jacket, although not as well heavier waterproof jackets. The elastic cuffs are a nice touch.

Outdoor Research also offers the Helium HD, which is a heavier-duty waterproof jacket. It has a Pertex Shield+ that is both breathable and waterproof. It’s wire-brimmed Halo hood does a better job of shielding your face than the standard edition. It also comes with a few extra pockets, which do increase the weight. It is still very light at 9.3oz.

Another Option

The Marmot Minimalist Jacket is another great lightweight waterproof option. It is GORE-TEX with Paclite technology. The Marmot Minimalist comes with pit zips, hand pockets, and an adjustable hood. As with the Helium HD, these extra features push its weight close to 10oz. It costs about $170.

Arc’teryx, known primarily for its outdoor gear, has a line of very durable urban clothing called Arc’teryx Veilance. The clothing is developed for outdoor performance, but is intended to suit the needs of person who lives and travels in the city. To construct the clothing, Arc’teryx makes use of highly durable materials like Gore-Tex Pro Shell, Gore-Tex Soft Shell, and Schoeller Nylon Face, a fabric that fuses a nylon shell to a merino wool backing and a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating.

Veilance clothing is made in Vancouver, Canada. It is warrantied to be free from defects for the “natural lifetime” of the product (I’m not sure what a natural lifetime means in years).

You can find Veilance clothing at Amazon.
