I’ve been researching the warmest wool products available. Here’s what I discovered:

Go Straight To My Recommendations

Qiviut (Musk Ox Down)

Qiviut (pronounced “kiv-ee-ute”) is the name for the downy hair of the musk ox. It is the warmest fiber in the world — about eight times as warm as sheep’s wool.

Muskoxen live in Alaska and Canada where temperatures sometimes drop to –100ºF (-73ºC), so they need protection. The Inuktitut name for the musk ox is “umingmak” meaning the “bearded one”.

Qiviut is an ultralight fiber and very soft fiber too. However, there is a limited amount of Qiviut produced every year, so it’s expensive.

In Alaska, qiviut is obtained from farmed animals or gathered from the wild during the molt. Unlike sheep, the musk oxen are not sheared.

Qiviut Summary

Extremely warm and light. A rare, soft, and luxurious fiber.

Yak Down

Similar to qiviut, yak down is a very warm fiber that’s also lightweight and soft. It’s a more affordable alternative to the rare qiviut.

Yaks are primarily raised by nomadic Tibetan and Mongolian families. Their wool is combed once per year in the springtime.

According to Kora (a yak performance wear company), the wool is 40% warmer than merino wool. It has 66% greater air permeability and 17% greater water vapor permeability (tested with ASTM D1518, ASTM D737, ASTM E96).

Yak Wool Summary

Extraordinarily soft, warm, and lightweight. Has some elasticity and bounce.

Bison Down

Bison down is a very warm, insulating fiber. It is also very durable for such a soft fiber. It has a moisture regain of about 30%, compared to 18% for sheep’s wool — this means that even when saturated, the fiber draws moisture away from one’s skin.

There is only a limited amount of fiber available – estimated at 10,000 pounds per year versus 2,100,000,000 pounds of sheep wool.

It is harvested in Colorado and South Dakota, as a by-product of the bison meat industry.

Bison Wool Summary

A short and quite fine fiber that offers unusual durability for its level of softness.

Alpaca Wool

Alpaca wool is about three times as warm as sheep’s wool, and it is lightweight and durable. It contains no lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic and odorless. Alpaca wool also has one of the highest moisture ‘wicking’ properties of all-natural fibers.

Alpacas are kept in herds that graze in the mountains of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Chile.

Alpaca Wool Summary

Delightfully smooth, supple feel. Durable fiber. Not elastic.

Other Wools

Other warm (and very soft) wools include llama, camel, angora, cashmere, vicuna, and guanaco.

Durability and Fineness

In terms of durability, bison is in most cases the strongest, followed by qiviut and yak down alpaca and merino.

In terms of fineness, any fiber that has a diameter of 20µ (microns) or less will feel very soft to the touch. In the alpaca world, the labeled “royal” alpaca should indicate fibers under 19 µ, “baby” alpaca should indicate fibers that are around 22.5µ, and “superfine” alpaca is 26µ.

There’s also an International Alpaca Mark that indicates the fiber is less than 28 µ.

In the merino world, look for wool labeled “ultrafine” (around 15-17 µ) or “superfine” (about 18-20 µ).

Here’s a list of fibers from finest to coarsest (in microns):

Vicuña (12µ)

The best waterproof boots are Chippewa’s Super Logger Steel Toe Waterproof Insulated Boot. They are high-end leather safety boots that are hand-crafted for rugged outdoor use. They blend traditional craftsmanship with the latest in waterproof and insulation technology to produce a boot that is both fashionable and durable.

The Details

Chippewa has been making quality boots in America since 1901. Over the course of a century they have built a loyal following among professional and recreational outdoorsmen. Chippewa boots are famous for their use of only the best premium raw materials and commitment to quality manufacturing.

The Waterproof Steel-Toe Super Logger is Chippewa’s best waterproof boot, and the best waterproof boot of 2016. The genuine leather is protected with Chip-A-Tex waterproof membrane system. Chip-A-Tex locks water out of the boot with a membrane shield, but allows air to pass through to keep feet from getting sweaty. The boots are further waterproofed with Dri-Lex moisture management system, which allows the boots to breathe and dry quickly. A removable Texon 460 waterproof insole prevents moisture from entering.

A Vibram Tacoma Logger Outsole increases boot stability, provides slip resistance and gives the boot traction in a variety of terrains, including wet surfaces. The thickly treaded leather outsole is attached to the upper leather using Goodyear welting.

Goodyear welting is the oldest and most durable method used in shoe construction for attaching the upper part of the shoe to the outsole. It is an additional strip of leather that runs between the outsole and insole, and makes the sole more durable and waterproof. It makes the boot easier to resole, so Chippewa boots can be resoled and will last for years.

In addition, the Super Logger gets our choice for best waterproof boot because of its quality insulation and protective steel toe. The steel toe exceeds ATSM F2413-05 standards for impact and compression, and is safe from electrical hazards. 3M Thinsulate Ultra Insulation provides superior warmth and comfort so that the boots can be worn in cold weather and in snowy conditions.

For Women

Chippewa also manufactures waterproof leather boots for women. The Oiled WP Logger Rugged Boot comes equipped with the same outdoor features as its male counterpart. It is insulated with 400 grams of 3M Thinsulate Ultra insulation to keep the feet warm and dry in the winter. The women’s version is made with a single stitched welt and is imported, which is unfortunate.

In A Nutshell

The most durable boots available are the Boss Engineer boots by Wesco. They are hand-crafted with the highest quality leather and have an extremely durable vibram sole. Wesco boots are hand-made in the United States and are resoleable. With proper maintenance, they can last a lifetime. They are available for around $455.

Redback’s Bobcat Leather Work Boot is another quality option. Since they have Polyurethane soles, Bobcats are not resoleable. They do, however, last a long time with proper care and are more affordable at around $176.

The Details

Boot quality has declined over the past few decades, as manufacturers drift away from high-quality materials and thoughtful craftsmanship to mass-produced synthetic products. Brands that once represented quality, such as Redwing, have moved their factories overseas. Durable boots still exist, though. Wesco is a company that has been making boots for lumberjacks, motorcyclists, and workmen since 1918. Priding themselves on their craftsmanship, Wesco continues in the tradition of artisan-quality boot making. According to their website:

Wesco boots are built in our own factory, in our own backyard. Every boot is made from top quality, full grain leather. The integrity of materials used throughout our boot building process is above reproach—steel is used where another boot maker might use plastic—leather is always used instead of cork. Our dedicated Wesco boot-makers work as a team, hand-to-hand, in a 155 step-by-step process that requires skill, strength, and discipline.

Wesco’s Engineer model has removable shock-absorbing inserts that are ideal for motorcyclists. Its strap is fastened with nickel-plated hardware. They are stylish, and the shaft measures 11″ from the heel, which might be too tall depending on your preference. The price tag also puts them out of most people’s reach.

The Boss Engineer boots are available from Amazon for about $410.

Another Option

A less expensive but still reliable option is Redback’s Bobcat Leather Work Boot. Redback boots are made in Australia from 2.5mm thick leather and are 20% tougher than other work boots. The soles are handmade Polyurethane, which lasts for a long while if it is well-maintained. According to Redback:

The boots are made from traditionally preferred cement lasted method whereby the leather is wrapped under the insole and fused under heat and pressure with high tech Polyester and Polamide molten sealant/adhesive.

The Bobcat Leather Work Boot is available on Amazon for about $176.

The Most Durable Leather Wallet: Saddleback Leather Front Pocket ID

The Saddleback Leather Front Pocket ID is a thin, stylish, and durable wallet crafted from some of the toughest leather on earth. Its minimalist design foregoes any unnecessary fasteners or compartments that might be vulnerable to wear and tear. The Full-Grain boot leather comes from the highly-prized top layer of cow skin, which is renowned for being both durable and elegant. UV and saltwater resistant polyester stitching ensure that the wallet will not fray at the seams after extensive use.

This wallet does not have a compartment for carrying cash, so it is not ideal for those who prefer paper to plastic at the register. While it is a bit tight, it does comfortably fit over 10 cards. The wallet’s simple, stylish design makes it appropriate for almost any occasion, from hiking to steak-house dinners. It looks, feels, and smells great. One drawback: the ID window is too small to fully display a driver’s license, so overzealous bartenders may ask you to take your ID out of the wallet.

The Most Durable Wallet with RFID Blocking Technology: RFID Bifold ID

The RFID Bifold ID is hand-crafted in the USA by RAGGEDedge Gear, a trio of competitive sailors with formidable sewing skills. Their wallets are made with carbon fiber, making them last 4 to 6 times longer than the average wallet. Their line of RFID blocking wallets is fitted with technology proven to block radio frequency signals that can be used to steal your personal information. The Bifold ID comes with six card sleeves as well as a full-size bill pocket and a secret stash spot.

While the RFID Bifold is spacious and durable, I am not partial to its appearance. The stitching is prominently displayed and, while masterful, is out of place in a formal setting. This wallet prizes craftsmanship and durability at the sacrifice of style.

Unwanted data loss can occur through accidental deletion, damage to the file system, operating system failure, or physical damage to the storage medium. Data recovery software can be used in these cases in an attempt to salvage whatever possible after the loss. Data recovery software is available to rescue information from a variety of media: hard disks, flash drives, optical discs, storage tapes, etc. This article focuses on a common need: recovering deleted files from a PC’s main storage device, the hard drive.

By reviewing sources such as Maximum PC, PC World, About.com, Recovery-Review.com, Download.com, and CNET, these are the top rated data recovery software for PCs:

Recuva (Free)

Pros:

Good results

Friendly, step-by-step recovery wizard

Free

Cons:

Not as full-featured as some paid programs

Top Review Sources:

Maximum PC: 7/10 “We have no trouble recommending Recuva as our favorite free file recovery app”

PC World: “If you just want a good un-delete program with a small disk footprint at no charge, then Recuva is what you’re looking for”

About.com: 5.0/5.0 “Recuva is, without a doubt, the very best free file recovery software available today”

Piriform’s Recuva guides you through the recovery process in a simple, non-intimidating fashion. It does a good job recovering files when you use the step-by-step wizard, and a great job recovering files when you explore the program’s advanced options. Nice features include a preview pane and the ability to re-establish a file’s folder structure. Recuva provides plenty of detail about the files it recovers so you can quickly find the one you are looking for. Recuva also includes a sector-based recovery tool, useful when you’ve had a serious crash and can’t boot your operating system. Recuva’s file shredding tool allows you to delete a file beyond recovery.

Recuva is available for free on Piriform’s website.

Quetek File Scavenger 3.2 ($50)

Pros:

Superior scanning

Preserves original file names

Cons:

Cost

Top Review Sources:

Recovery-Review.com: “Quetek…managed to create a program that is easy to navigate, even for beginners.”

Download.com User Reviews: 4.0/5.0 (170+ reviews)

Maximum PC: 9/10 “If you’re willing to pay for file recovery, this is your program”

Reviewers are impressed by File Scavenger 3.2’s huge list of file types from which you can select to narrow your search. This element is just one example of the program’s robust feature set. You can search very specifically for files in certain areas of the drive, plus you can choose from different scan types—from the instantaneous Quick to the time-consuming and very thorough Long. Its recovery performance is top-notch. You can view results in a convenient tree structure as well as sort them by common attributes like type, date, location, etc. Unlike many file recovery programs, Quetek File Scavenger 3.2 reconstructs original file names, rather than return results that still have the additional characters added by the Recycle Bin.

Quetek File Scavenger 3.2 is available for purchase on the manufacturer’s product page.

Pandora Recovery (Free)

Pros:

Straightforward interface

Great performance

Free

Cons:

Beginners may be confused by advanced options

Top Review Sources:

CNET: 4.5/5.0 “File recovery has never been easier thanks to Pandora Recovery”

PC World: 3.5/5.0 “For restoring files that you’ve deleted from your hard drive, Pandora Recovery is one solid option”

About.com: 4.0/5.0 “The wizard included with the program is the easiest to use and understand wizard that I’ve seen in an undelete program”

Pandora Recovery’s interface is exceptionally clean and straightforward, yet reviewers are even more impressed with the program’s file recovery wizard. This intuitive, step-by-step guide leads you through the recovery process, anticipating your needs along the way. As you proceed, its interface changes to accommodate your selections. You’ll be able to narrow the search down as best you can before initiating a scan. Once a scan starts, you won’t have to wait long for results. Pandora’s speed is not at the expense of its accuracy, however; the program impresses with its successful restoration of deleted files.

Download Pandora Recovery for free on the official site.

Commercial drive encryption software is a popular way to encrypt the contents of a disk drive and prevent unauthorized access. Information is encrypted via algorithms that vary in formula but function in similar ways. Most commonly, the encrypted information is accessed via a passcode. As its name suggests, drive encryption protects an entire volume; those looking to encrypt only select folders or files, to have different passcodes, to have varying levels of encryption across a drive should consider file encryption software instead.

After researching expert and user opinions on sites such as CNET, Tom’s Hardware, Techworld, PC Magazine, ITPRO, V3.co.uk, Computerworld, and 4sysops, we’ve compiled a list of the top rated drive encryption software for PCs:

TrueCrypt

TrueCrypt (Free)

Pros:

Free

Low performance impact

Works across platforms

Cons:

Learning curve can be steep

Top Review Sources:

CNET: 4.5/5.0 “The ultimate freeware encryption program”

Tom’s Hardware: “We recommend downloading and trying TrueCrypt even if you are not looking for a security solution”

Techworld: “TrueCrypt is a real winner and comes at a price that can’t be beat”

TrueCrypt is a major name in drive encryption software. Once installed, this free software allows the user to encrypt his or her entire drive, a process that initially can take several hours (the computer remains useable during the process). The user can select from three different encryption algorithms (AES, Serpent, and Twofish) or a combination of the three. Once fully encrypted, TrueCrypt continues to automatically protect new information in real time; a single master passcode is all that you need to boot your computer and go about your normal activities. TrueCrypt’s automatic encryption feature is likely to have little noticeable impact on system performance unless you have an older system or are using multi-level encryption—an extra security measure unnecessary for most users. In the event you need to remove TrueCrypt, the decryption process is clean and hassle-free.

TrueCrypt provides the option of partial drive and external drive (including USB flash) encryption. Additionally, TrueCrypt works across platforms, which is great for those who also use Macintosh or Linux. The learning curve for beginners can be steep; the user interface isn’t fully intuitive and there are dangers in using the software without adequate knowledge. However, TrueCrypt’s online documentation is excellent and provides adequate instruction for those willing to invest the time.

ZoneAlarm is a familiar and reliable name in internet security. The company’s DataLock software offers full-disk protection by means of 256-bit AES encryption and a password prompt at startup. A stand-out feature of ZoneAlarm DataLock is the 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week hotline for password recovery. While forgetting your master passcode should be avoided at all costs when using any software encryption program, it is good to know that DataLock provides a convenient means of unlocking your system should you need it. As part of the quick and straightforward setup process, you will create security questions and answers that you’ll have to know in order to recover your password via DataLock’s hotline.

Initial encryption can take hours for hard drives packed with information, but your computer remains useable and subsequent encryption is performed on-the-fly with negligible performance impact. The clean user interface will be familiar to anyone used to using other ZoneAlarm products. Encryption with DataLock is largely set-it-and-forget-it. Note that DataLock is for laptops only; if the software does not find a battery connected to your computer, it will not install.

ZoneAlarm DataLock can be purchased through Amazon.

Microsoft BitLocker (Free)

Pros:

Free

Transparent operation

Seamless incorporation with Windows

Cons:

Only available for certain editions of Windows

Not as feature-rich as other disk encryption utilities

Top Review Sources:

Computerworld: “Encryption is difficult to implement properly…and Microsoft deserves kudos for making it possible to do this in such a tightly integrated way in Windows”

4sysops: “It greatly simplifies the encryption of a system drive”

PC Magazine: “BitLocker reaches its full potential on computers that include…a Trusted Platform Module (TPM)”

Microsoft’s BitLocker is a free drive encryption utility available for the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista and 7, as well as Windows Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2. Though BitLocker is free, users running versions of Windows other than those listed above are not able to install it. For those using compatible versions of Windows, BitLocker is a strong-performing disk encryption utility. It employs 128-bit AES encryption and several modes of authentication, including entering a PIN at startup, using a passcode saved on a USB flash drive, or utilizing your computer’s Trusted Platform Module (TPM). TPM is an emerging, hardware-based technology that uses a special microchip to verify system integrity before bootup. The TPM stores a key used to unlock the system; if an attacker removes your hard drive, he or she will be unable to read its contents because the drive has been separated from the TPM. Likewise, if the Windows startup process is altered, the TPM will prevent the operating system from loading.

Once activated, BitLocker encrypts new files on-the-fly with very little performance impact. While all disk encryption software takes a slight edge off a computer’s overall speed, BitLocker is one of the least cumbersome. On Windows 7 machines, you also have access to BitLocker To Go, a utility that allows you to encrypt removable media.
